Laugh with or at Janeane Garofalo?
Janeane Garofalo is hilarious. I'm just not sure she's being hilarious on purpose. From Howard Dean's official blog:
Link via Hugh Hewitt. UPDATE: OK, some of the commenters -- perchance they are Deaniacs and it's not a great night for them? -- are taking this in the wrong spirit. What I thought was so funny was how many pins/hats/symbols she was wearing. [Flair. The word you're looking for is flair!!--ed.] Nothing against Janeane -- I still like her from The Larry Sanders Show. posted by Dan on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PMComments: Huh? posted by: GT on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]“I'm just not sure she's being hilarious on purpose.” Janeane Garofalo is not trying to pull anyone’s leg. She is dead serious. We should indeed laugh at her. Garofalo is nearing forty years of age in a business which can be ruthless towards aging female entertainers. Think Britney Spears. She is doing anything to keep her name in the headlines. posted by: David Thomson on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Okay, bloglines said you had a new entry from the looney hack. Clicked over. Clicked through. Yawn. Heh. Indeed. Who gives half a dead rat. She's a Democrat! You don't say. She forgot sex sells. posted by: j Swift on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]All we need to know about this woman is this quote from further down the blog: "Before the rally begins, think really hard right now if you know anyone in Iowa. Every phone call counts. Call your ex-boyfriend, your long-lost high school soccer friend, your cousin thrice removed, your ex-coworker. But whatever you do, do something -- overflow your action and your power. Thanks." Overflow your action and your power? That should play well in Dubuque. posted by: jack on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Is Drezner so out of touch that he finds the concept of volunteering for Howard Dean hilarious by itself? Or is he so out of touch that he doesn't know that political volunteers for all parties and all candidates typically wear pins and shirts with messages? Not sure if I should laugh with Drezner or at Drezner, but leaning towards "at". posted by: arthur on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]If you take your political hack hat off, and think back to what that Ph.D awarded to you originally stood for, that is, you are a person capable of teaching teachers, than you might post of Garofalo as a courageous woman of high honor with a great respect for our democratic system. She has been rewarded by the system, and she is investing her time, money, and energy back into the system. She is brave indeed, compared to various actor/actress counterparts, she is not afraid of being photographed in relatively unphotogenic poses, and she is not afraid to speak her true thoughts. And she's not a fly by night. She has campaigned long and hard for her candidate. She deserves our respect. With this post, you do not. posted by: anne.elk on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Does the Dean campaign demand that their supporters wear a suitable number of "flare"? posted by: laura on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Sounds like Janeane has a lot of pieces of flair! posted by: Steve in Houston on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Ha! I got the joke in first, even if Steve got the correct spelling of "flair" and the link. posted by: laura on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]lighten up guys. The humor is the shear number of pins and symbols. Like what does she think she is, a NASCAR race car?
Tallan, what is your Coming from someone who used to respect her a great deal, around the time she started tossing around the term "43rd Reich" was the time she lost that respect. Because she can wear pins and "get people to the polls" (well, no I guess she can't), sorry, that isn't deserving of anyone's respect. posted by: HH on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Yeah, Anne, it takes true courage to be left-wing and anti-Republican in Hollywood. She's fighting to distinguish herself from the herd, there. It doesn't take courage to make remarks like "When Communist USSR was a superpower, the world was better off". It just takes a lack of intellgence and education. posted by: Dan on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Well, I really liked her in "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" posted by: Sam_S on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Assuming she is doing this to stay in the head lines is silly. She is getting blackballed because of it. posted by: thomas on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]"It takes true courage to be left-wing and anti-Republican in Hollywood." I know, I know. Martin Sheen, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Barbra Streisand, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Woody Harrelson, and 'lil Janeane are who I'd wanna be in a foxhole with when the shit hit the fan. posted by: daniel stoddart on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Has Janeane Garofalo said or done anything funny, ever? Please site. posted by: Mark Buehner on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Truth With Cats and Dogs is a very entertaining movie. I also laughed at her scenes in Bye Bye Love (terrible assembly line film). But she takes herself too seriously. I enjoy Margaret Cho's political rants more. posted by: Jon on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]I enjoyed Garofalo's comedy myself. Mystery Men is an underrated movie IMO. However, her work used to be based on both wit and intellect and her political commentary lacks both. I'm especially touched by the utter lack of a sense of humor among her defenders here. posted by: Robin Roberts on 01.19.04 at 06:17 PM [permalink]Not really defending or attacking, but the excerpt reminds me of the mandatory 15+ pieces of flare from Office Space.
